About Tex & Jerry's Eatery

Eat like a horse. Tex and Jerry would!

The Legend of Tex & Jerry

Tex and Jerry were two hardy freight horses who, in the brutal winter of 1900–1901, vanished into deep snow after breaking loose from a logging sled along the South Fork of the Flathead River. For nearly a month, they wandered the wilderness—thin, exhausted, and surviving on native brush and willows—until locals found them nearly skeletal but still alive. Nicknamed the “Mighty Hungry Horses,” their survival story put Hungry Horse, Montana, on the map. Jerry later pulled a fire wagon in Kalispell, while Tex served at the Kalispell Mercantile Company, forever weaving their legacy into the fabric of the valley.

The town of Hungry Horse, Montana gets its name from two hardworking horses—Tex and Jerry—who wandered off into deep snow one winter and came back starving. At Tex & Jerry’s Eatery, we honor their hungry spirit. After a day of hiking Glacier Park or exploring Montana, two hungry hikers (or more!) can always find a meal here. Eat like a horse. Tex and Jerry would.
